Master of Science in Computer Science

About this Program

This program is jointly run by Tianjin University and the University of Liverpool. It integrates the high-quality educational resources of both universities, and fully adopts the curriculum system of UoL (courses are delivered either by faculty from UoL or by TJU faculty following the teaching standards of UoL). It is dedicated to cultivating outstanding talents in the field of computer science with international perspectives, innovative capabilities, and the adaptability to meet the demands of global economic development.

If students didn’t study computer science at degree level, this MSc combines a wide-ranging introduction to the analysis, design and implementation of computer systems, with a comprehensive understanding of cutting-edge research. Students will be immersed in software design, programming, datasets, information systems and web applications and develop all the skills needed to conduct independent research in computer science.

This MSc provides a depth of knowledge in computer science, underpinned by a thorough understanding of key issues at the forefront of current research in this discipline.

Students will learn how to design and create software, gain experience of modern programming languages, and discover how databases are used in modern information systems, from supermarket checkouts to online banking.

Students will also equip you with a good understanding of the most significant technologies for developing web applications. These include HTML, Cascading Style Sheets, JavaScript, and PHP.

Further opportunities to specialise and enhance knowledge are available through a range of optional modules. Students could choose to focus on topics including artificial intelligence, biologically inspired optimisation, neural networks, data mining, machine learning, multi-agent systems, e-commerce, online map visualisations, or software safety and dependability.

Students will have the opportunity to work as part of a small group on a practical project to find a solution to a computer science problem. This program will also provide a thorough grounding in how to plan and conduct research in preparation for dissertation.

Program Planning

Students need to complete 190 credits (according to UoL credit system), including 180 credits of courses offered by Uol and one course offered by TJU (converted to the 10-credit standard of UoL). Students who meet the degree requirements will be formally awarded the Master of Science in Computer Science by UoL.

Curriculum and Credit Requirements are as follow:
